Dry Cupping Therapy in Ashburton, Devon

A Traditional Approach to Modern Muscular Aches

Dry cupping is an age-old therapy with roots in traditional Eastern medicine, now widely recognised for its effectiveness in relieving muscular tension, improving circulation, and supporting the body’s natural detoxification process.

At Wholesome Health Chiropractic & Well-being Centre, we offer dry cupping as a standalone therapy or as part of a tailored treatment plan, to help you feel lighter, looser, and more aligned — naturally.

Benefits of Dry Cupping

Dry cupping can offer a wide range of therapeutic benefits, including:

This treatment is often described as a “reverse massage” — instead of applying pressure into the tissues, it lifts and loosens them from above.

What is Dry Cupping?

Dry cupping involves placing specially designed suction cups on the skin to create a vacuum effect. This gentle suction lifts the soft tissue, encouraging blood flow to the area and stimulating the body’s natural healing processes.

Unlike wet cupping, which involves incisions, dry cupping is non-invasive and works purely through negative pressure. It’s particularly effective for releasing muscular tightness, reducing inflammation, and enhancing movement and recovery.

Cupping may leave circular marks or discolouration (bruising) where the cups have been applied — this is completely normal and usually fades within a few days.

What Can I Expect During a Session?

Your therapist will begin with a consultation to understand your symptoms, health history, and goals for treatment. Cups will then be applied to specific areas — commonly the back, shoulders, hips, or thighs — and left in place for a short period, usually between 5–15 minutes.

Your sessions will include a combination of hands-on massage, static and gliding cupping, where the cups are gently moved across the skin to treat larger muscle groups or fascia.

Cupping can be combined with massage, chiropractic care, or soft tissue therapy for enhanced results.

Dry Cupping FAQs

Here are some answer to common question we get asked…

Does cupping hurt?

Cupping isn’t typically painful, but you may feel a tight pulling or stretching sensation as the suction engages. Most people find it relaxing and describe a sense of tension “melting away.” If anything feels too intense, we will adjust immediately.

Will it leave marks?

Yes, it’s completely normal for cupping to leave circular red or purple marks, especially over tight or congested areas. These are similar to bruises yet are not painful — they’re a sign of increased circulation. They usually fade within a few days to a week.

Is cupping safe?

Yes, when performed by trained professionals. Cupping is safe and effective for most people. We always carry out a thorough consultation to make sure it’s suitable for you and to rule out any contraindications.

What conditions can cupping help with?

Dry cupping may help with:

Muscular pain and stiffness

Neck and shoulder tension

Lower back discomfort

Headaches and migraines

Sports recovery

Sciatica or hip pain

General stress and fatigue

Can I combine cupping with other treatments?

Absolutely. Cupping works beautifully alongside chiropractic care, massage therapy, or soft tissue work. It can be used at the start of a session to release deeper tension or as a finishing technique to improve circulation and recovery.

Do I need to do anything after a cupping session?

We recommend drinking plenty of water, avoiding intense exercise for 24 hours, and keeping the cupped areas warm. You may feel relaxed or slightly tired after your session — this is a normal part of your body’s healing response.

Who shouldn’t have cupping?

Cupping may not be suitable if you:

Are pregnant (except in certain modified applications)

Have thin or fragile skin

Take blood-thinning medication

Have open wounds, skin infections, or severe eczema

Have certain heart or clotting conditions

We’ll always check thoroughly to ensure cupping is safe and appropriate for you.
