Pregnancy Massage FAQs

Here are some answer to common question we get asked…

How do I lay during the massage

At Wholesome Health, we use supportive pregnancy pillows and bolsters to position you comfortably and safely on your front, side — or semi-reclined if needed — so that you can fully relax without any pressure on your abdomen or lower back.

Lying flat on your back for extended periods during pregnancy isn’t advised, especially after the first trimester. We ensure you’re comfortable throughout

What should I wear for the massage?

You’re welcome to undress to your level of comfort. Most clients remove outer clothing but remain in their underwear and are appropriately covered with towels throughout the treatment. If you feel more comfortable wearing soft leggings or a maternity vest, that’s absolutely fine too. Your comfort and dignity are always our priority.

Can I have a massage in the first trimester?

We generally begin pregnancy massage treatments from the second trimester (after 12 weeks). This is a precautionary measure as the first trimester is a time of rapid change and higher sensitivity. If you’re unsure, we recommend consulting your midwife or GP before booking.

Is pregnancy massage suitable for high-risk pregnancies?

In some cases, yes — but we always recommend getting written or verbal approval from your midwife or consultant if you have a high-risk pregnancy, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, or any other medical concerns. We’re happy to adapt your massage once we understand your needs.

How often can I have pregnancy massage?

This varies by individual. Some women benefit from monthly sessions during the second trimester, moving to fortnightly or weekly treatments in the third trimester as the body prepares for birth. We’ll work with you to create a schedule that feels supportive and realistic.

Will the massage include my bump?

Massage can include gentle work around the abdomen using light, nurturing strokes, especially in later stages of pregnancy — but only with your full consent and if you’re comfortable. Some women love this, while others prefer to focus on other areas like the back, hips, legs, or neck. Everything is tailored to you.

What if I need to move or use the loo during the session?

Pregnancy bodies have their own rhythms! You’re welcome to move, shift position, or take a break at any time. Your therapist will always encourage open communication to ensure you’re comfortable throughout.

Can massage help with pelvic or lower back pain?

Yes, pregnancy massage is especially beneficial for pelvic girdle pain (PGP), sciatica, and lower back discomfort. We focus on relieving tension in the hips, glutes, lower back, and surrounding structures — supporting better posture and comfort as your body changes.
